Qwen API
Alibaba Cloud's hosted API for its Qwen models through Model Studio, with OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints in several regions.
The Qwen API is how you call Alibaba's Qwen models without hosting them: Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (formerly DashScope, and Bailian in mainland China) serves the closed Max, Plus and Flash models, vision, coding and omni models, hosted versions of the open-weight Qwen releases, and third-party models such as DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM and MiniMax. The current Max, Plus and Flash models take up to 1M tokens of context. For running the open-weight models yourself, see Qwen.
You can use the OpenAI SDK by pointing it at the /compatible-mode/v1 path, the Anthropic SDK or Claude Code at /apps/anthropic, or the native DashScope API and its dashscope SDK. Each region has its own endpoint, API key and model list, and a key only works in the region where it was created. Alibaba recommends a per-workspace domain ({WorkspaceId}.{region}.maas.aliyuncs.com); the older dashscope-intl.aliyuncs.com style domains keep working but get no new features after September 30, 2026.
Useful for a small team: one key covers Qwen plus several other model families; the Singapore region gives new accounts a free quota of about 1M tokens per model for 90 days, with a "Free Quota Only" switch that stops calls instead of billing once it runs out; batch calls cost half the real-time price; and explicit context-cache hits are billed at a fraction of normal input.
The main thing to choose is the region. Mainland China (Beijing), International (Singapore), Hong Kong, Tokyo, Frankfurt with an EU scope and Virginia with a US scope are offered; request data is stored in the region you call, and inference runs inside the deployment scope you pick. Batch inference and fine-tuning are only in Singapore and Beijing. Prices differ by region and are tiered by prompt length on some models.

We haven't found a maker's live product that uses Qwen API yet — only the open-source projects below, which declare it in their code.
Open source: a project that declares Qwen API as a dependency in its public code — verifiable, but not necessarily a live product.
Alternatives to Qwen API
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Qwen API
Where is my data stored and processed?
In the region you call. Requests are stored in that region and sent for inference only within the deployment scope you chose, such as EU for a Frankfurt workspace or US for Virginia; Beijing is mainland-only and Singapore is international. source ↗
Does Alibaba train on the data I send?
No. Model Studio's privacy notice says Alibaba Cloud won't use your data for model training, and that it stores data from model and application calls as required by law. source ↗
Can I use the OpenAI SDK?
Yes. Change the API key, base URL (ending in /compatible-mode/v1 for your region) and model name. Qwen-Audio is the exception and needs the native DashScope protocol. source ↗
Why does my key return 401 on another endpoint?
API keys are bound to the region they were created in, so a Beijing key sent to the Virginia endpoint fails with invalid_api_key. Create a key in each region you call. source ↗
Is there a free tier?
A trial quota, not a permanent tier. New accounts get a free quota per model (typically 1M tokens) in the Singapore region, valid for 90 days; other regions have none. Turn on Free Quota Only if you don't want pay-as-you-go to start automatically. source ↗
How do rate limits work?
Requests and tokens per minute are set per model and counted across your whole Alibaba Cloud account. The trial domain is capped at 1,000 RPM and has no SLA; production domains carry a 99.9% SLA. source ↗
Is Qwen API free?
No permanent free tier; paid use starts at Pay per token. source ↗
Is Qwen API open source or self-hostable?
Not open source, and hosted only.
Can AI coding agents work with Qwen API?
No llms.txt, official MCP server or CLI found yet.
