Express

Minimal Node.js web framework for building HTTP servers and APIs; the long-standing default choice for many projects.

Express is a small web framework for Node.js. It handles the plumbing of an HTTP server — matching URLs and methods to handler functions, reading requests and sending responses — and leaves almost every other decision to you.

The core idea is middleware: an Express app is a chain of functions that each receive the request, the response and a next callback, and either answer the request or pass it along. Routing, body parsing, sessions, CORS and error handling are all middleware, and express.Router() lets you group routes into modules. Express 5 forwards errors thrown in async handlers to your error middleware automatically, so you no longer need to wrap every handler in a try/catch.

For a small team, the practical draw is the catalog: the Express team maintains modules such as body-parser, cors, multer, session and compression, and the docs list many popular third-party middleware modules on top. It runs anywhere Node runs — a VPS, a container or a platform service — and the docs recommend a process manager in production so the app restarts after a crash.

Express has no opinion on databases, models, authentication, validation or project structure; you assemble each one yourself. It is written in JavaScript and does not ship its own TypeScript types, so typed projects rely on the community @types/express package.

Loved and watch-outs

Themes that recur in makers' words and Hacker News comments, each linked to what it summarises.

Most loved
  • A plain Node and Express server is a simple, low-cost way to get a first product running on a small VPS. Starter StoryStarter Story 2Starter Story 3
  • It is battle-tested with a large middleware ecosystem, so developers keep it over newer runtime built-ins. HNHN 2
  • The minimal core lets you pick your own building blocks and keep dependencies few. HNHN 2
Watch-outs
  • With little convention, each app becomes a homegrown framework that is hard to pick back up months later. HNHN 2
  • End-to-end route typing needs extra libraries, pushing TypeScript teams toward newer frameworks or custom layers. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Express

Does Express work with TypeScript?

Yes, but the types are not bundled. You install typescript, @types/express and @types/node as dev dependencies; the types are community-maintained on DefinitelyTyped. source ↗

Which Node.js version does Express 5 need?

Express 5 requires Node.js 18 or newer. Express 4 is still listed as supported, and in each major line only the latest release receives fixes. source ↗

Can I use async/await in route handlers?

Yes. Since Express 5, a handler or middleware that throws inside an async function or returns a rejected promise has the error passed to your error-handling middleware, as if you had called next(err). source ↗

How do I add a database or user login?

Express doesn't include either. It has no notion of models or a database and no built-in authentication, so you pick a Node database library and an auth scheme yourself. source ↗

How should I structure an Express app?

Express doesn't impose a layout. Routes and logic can live in any files and folders you like, and the docs point to example patterns such as route maps and MVC-style controllers. source ↗

How do I keep an Express app running in production?

The docs recommend running it under a process manager, which restarts the app if it crashes, plus your OS init system to restart the process manager itself, and using clustering to use every CPU core. source ↗

Is Express free?

Yes — it is free, open-source software.

Is Express open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Express?

It serves an llms.txt docs index.
