Hono
Small, fast web framework for building HTTP APIs that runs on Node, Bun, Deno, Cloudflare Workers, and other JS runtimes.
Works with AI agents:llms.txtCLIHono is a small TypeScript web framework for writing HTTP APIs and simple server-rendered pages. It solves a specific problem: code written for one JavaScript runtime usually breaks on another, while Hono's same app runs on Cloudflare Workers, Deno, Bun, Node.js, AWS Lambda, Vercel, Netlify, Fastly and others.
How it works: Hono is built only on Web Standard APIs. A handler receives a context object wrapping a standard Request and returns a standard Response, and an app is just an object with a fetch method, which is the shape edge runtimes expect. On Node.js it runs through an adapter (Node 18.14+). Routes and middleware chain the way Express users expect, and the core has zero dependencies.
What you get: built-in middleware for CORS, CSRF, JWT and bearer auth, secure headers, compression, caching and request IDs; validators for Zod, Valibot and others; an RPC client that infers request and response types straight from your server routes, so a frontend gets typed API calls without code generation; JSX rendering, streaming and WebSocket helpers; and OpenAPI generation through community middleware. Deployment is wherever your runtime runs; there is no hosted Hono service.
The limit is scope: Hono is a router, not a full framework. It has no ORM, no project structure and no built-in admin or auth system, and its validator is deliberately thin. Its docs also advise against Rails-style controllers, because path types are lost when handlers are split away from route definitions.

Alternatives to Hono
All alternatives by situation →Questions makers ask about Hono
Does it work with Next.js?
Yes, on the Node.js runtime, by mounting a Hono app in a Next.js route handler; create-hono has a nextjs template and it deploys to Vercel Functions. source ↗
Which Node.js versions are supported?
Node 18.14.1+, 19.7.0+ or 20+, through the official Node.js adapter (@hono/node-server). Hono was designed for Web Standard runtimes first and runs on Node via that adapter. source ↗
How do I validate request bodies?
Hono ships a minimal validator, and official middleware connects it to Zod, Valibot and other libraries. Validated types then flow into handlers and into the RPC client. source ↗
Can my frontend get typed API calls?
Yes. Export the type of your app or routes, and the hc client infers each route's inputs and JSON outputs from it, with no code generation step. It needs strict TypeScript on both sides in a monorepo. source ↗
Can it generate OpenAPI docs?
Not in core, but middleware listed in the docs does, including the official Zod OpenAPI package plus Swagger UI and Scalar integrations. source ↗
Is there auth middleware for providers like Clerk or Firebase?
Yes. Besides built-in Basic, Bearer and JWT auth, there is middleware for Auth.js, Clerk, Firebase Auth, OIDC and OAuth providers. source ↗
Can it render HTML, or is it API-only?
It can render HTML with its built-in JSX support and a JSX renderer middleware, and there are streaming and static-site helpers, though there is no frontend framework or client-side routing included. source ↗
Is Hono free?
Yes — it is free, open-source software.
Is Hono open source or self-hostable?
Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗
Can AI coding agents work with Hono?
It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official CLI (@hono/cli).
Who uses Hono?
3 makers' products we track, each with a source, and 120 open-source projects declare it in their code. source ↗
