TanStack Start is a full-stack framework for React and Solid built on TanStack Router. It takes the router's type-safe routes, search params and loaders and adds full-document server rendering, streaming, server functions and server routes, built with Vite or Rsbuild.

Routing is entirely TanStack Router, so route params, search params and loader data are typed end to end. Server code is written as server functions: you define a function with createServerFn, call it from components or loaders like a normal async function, and Start turns it into a same-origin RPC endpoint with CSRF protection. For endpoints other services call, you write server routes instead. Middleware attaches context such as the current user to requests.

Rendering can be chosen per route, from full SSR to selective SSR, static pre-rendering, incremental regeneration or a client-only SPA mode that still uses server functions. It is designed to deploy to any host; Cloudflare, Netlify and Railway are official hosting partners, with documented targets for Vercel, Node or Docker, Bun and Nitro.

The project describes itself as a release candidate: feature-complete with a stable API, but not yet v1. React Server Components are experimental and opt-in. There is no built-in user system, so authentication means a managed provider or building sessions with its server primitives.

Questions makers ask about TanStack Start

Is TanStack Start stable enough for production?

It is a release candidate: the team considers it feature-complete and the API stable, but says that does not mean it is free of bugs. source ↗

Should I use Start or just TanStack Router?

If you are sure you need no server rendering, streaming, server functions or server routes, TanStack Router alone gives you the typed SPA routing. Start adds those server-side features on top of the same router. source ↗

Where can I host it?

It works with any host. Cloudflare Workers, Netlify and Railway are official partners, and the docs also cover Vercel, Node.js or Docker, Bun, Nitro and Appwrite Sites. source ↗

Does it support React Server Components?

Yes, as an experimental feature that is off by default; you enable it in the build config and install an RSC plugin when using Vite. source ↗

Can I run it without server rendering?

Yes. SPA mode ships a static HTML shell that a CDN can serve, and you can still call server functions and server routes from it. source ↗

Does it include authentication?

No. The docs recommend a managed provider such as Clerk or WorkOS where possible, and otherwise give guidance on session cookies, OAuth, CSRF and rate limiting for building your own. source ↗

Can I migrate a Next.js app?

Yes, there is a step-by-step guide with a before-and-after example. Start does not read Next.js routing conventions or config, so each route, data load and mutation is translated by hand. source ↗

Is TanStack Start free?

Yes — it is free, open-source software.

Is TanStack Start open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with TanStack Start?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official CLI (@tanstack/cli).
