Supabase gives each project a hosted backend built around a full Postgres database. Instead of writing your own API server for basic reads and writes, you design tables in SQL and call them from the browser or a mobile app, with access controlled by Postgres row-level security policies.

Each project bundles several open-source services around that database: PostgREST turns your schema into a REST API (with GraphQL through an extension), an Auth server issues JWTs that the database's security policies can check, Storage keeps files in S3-compatible buckets with metadata in Postgres, Realtime streams database changes, broadcast and presence over WebSockets, and Edge Functions run TypeScript on Deno. Official client libraries cover JavaScript, Flutter, Swift, Kotlin, Python and C#, and the @supabase/ssr package handles cookie-based sessions for server-rendered frameworks such as Next.js.

For a small team, the database is not abstracted away: you get full Postgres privileges, extensions, a web dashboard (Studio), and a CLI that runs the whole stack locally for development. The hosted platform runs on AWS, and you pick one primary region per project. The same stack can also be self-hosted with Docker.

Self-hosting is a reduced version: one project per install, community support, and no branching, managed backups, point-in-time recovery or Management API. Free hosted projects are paused after a week without activity, and Supabase recommends that free projects export their own backups.

Hey everyone! 👋 Founder here again. Great question about the backend stack! We chose Supabase for Rankfender after evaluating all four options, and here's why: 1. PostgreSQL from day one. Unlike Convex (NoSQL) or Appwrite (document-based), Supabase gives us full SQL power with ACID compliance . For a data-heavy platform tracking AI answers and keyword performance, we needed relational integrity and complex queries—Postgres delivers that out of the box . 2. Open-source = no vendor lock-in. Railway is great for deployment flexibility, but it's more of a PaaS than a full BaaS—we'd have to build auth, storage, and realtime ourselves . Supabase gives us the "batteries-included" backend (auth, realtime, storage, edge functions) and we can self-host if needed . That matters for enterprise clients down the road. 3. Real-time capabilities. We monitor AI-generated answers as they appear—that requires live data sync. Supabase's real-time subscriptions (built on Postgres logical replication) give us this without extra infrastructure . 4. Growing ecosystem. With customers like Mozilla, GitHub, and 1Password using it , we knew Supabase could scale with us. The branching feature integrated with Git is also a lifesaver for our development workflow . Why not the others? Railway: Too low-level. We'd spend weeks building auth and storage instead of focusing on AI visibility features. Convex: Great for real-time apps, but the NoSQL model and less mature auth meant more complexity for our relational data . Appwrite: Solid option, but the document database approach didn't fit our SQL-heavy needs, and real-time felt less battle-tested . At the end of the day, Supabase hit the sweet spot: PostgreSQL power + Firebase-like speed + open-source flexibility. It let us build fast without painting ourselves into a corner. 🚀 Happy to dive deeper if anyone has follow-up questions!

We went from zero to a shipped in under two months and Supabase was a huge part of that. Database, real-time, storage — all just worked without us thinking about infra. We considered Firebase (which we have used in the past for auth) and just running our own Postgres, but Supabase's Postgres foundation gave us way more flexibility for querying across conversation data, and the auto-generated REST API meant we barely wrote any backend code. For a two-person team on a hard deadline, it was the difference between shipping on time and not shipping at all. Alternatives we considered: Firebase (we actually used it in the past for auth, but Supabase's Postgres foundation gave us way more flexibility for complex queries across conversation data), and just running our own Postgres on Railway. Tip: If you're a small team on a tight deadline, don't underestimate how much time Supabase's auto-generated REST API saves you. We barely wrote any backend code.

Supabase has been one of the standout pieces of our stack. The product itself is excellent, but what really sets it apart is how accessible the whole experience feels — the UI, the configuration, the documentation. Everything is designed so that even non-technical operators can navigate it confidently without needing an engineer on call. We use Supabase as the database layer at ClawSecure, and it's been remarkably reliable. The ability to jump into the dashboard, inspect data, manage tables, and configure settings without writing raw SQL every time has been a genuine productivity unlock for how we move. Supabase quietly removes a barrier most database tools don't even acknowledge exists, and that lowered friction shows up everywhere; faster iteration, fewer blockers, more time spent on the actual product.

Questions makers ask about Supabase

Can I self-host Supabase?

Yes, with the official Docker Compose setup (Kubernetes is community-maintained). A self-hosted install runs a single project, is community-supported, and lacks hosted-only features such as branching, managed backups, point-in-time recovery and the Management API. source ↗

Where is my data stored, and can I keep it in the EU?

Each project lives in one primary AWS region that you choose, and that region is where its data is stored. If data must stay in a particular jurisdiction, pick a specific region rather than a general grouping such as "Europe", which can place you outside the EU. source ↗

What happens when a free project is paused?

Free projects pause after a week of inactivity; paid projects can't be paused. A paused project can be restored from the dashboard with one click for a year; after that you can still download its backup and storage objects and restore them into a new project or locally. source ↗

Are free projects backed up?

Automatic daily backups come with the paid plans. Supabase recommends that free-plan projects export their data regularly with the CLI's db dump command and keep copies elsewhere; backups also never include files stored through the Storage API. source ↗

Can I move to Supabase from Firebase, Auth0 or another Postgres host?

Supabase publishes migration guides for Firebase Auth, Firestore and Firebase Storage, Auth0, and databases on Heroku, Render, Amazon RDS, Neon, Vercel Postgres, MySQL and MSSQL. Because it is plain Postgres, standard Postgres tools work for moving data in and out. source ↗

Is Supabase SOC 2 or HIPAA compliant?

Supabase holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications; on its plan comparison these are listed for the Team and Enterprise plans. HIPAA is available on those plans as a paid add-on. source ↗

Does it work with Next.js server-side rendering?

Yes. Server-rendered apps keep the session in cookies, and the @supabase/ssr package together with supabase-js handles this for Next.js and other JavaScript frameworks. source ↗

Is Supabase free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $25/mo. source ↗

Is Supabase open source or self-hostable?

Open source, and you can self-host it. source ↗

Can AI coding agents work with Supabase?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official MCP server (com.supabase/mcp); it has an official CLI (supabase); Bolt, Lovable, v0 set it up natively.

Who uses Supabase?
