Firebase is Google's set of backend services for app developers. Its main idea is that your web or mobile client talks to the backend directly through Firebase SDKs, so many apps need little or no server code of their own: sign-in, data, file uploads and push notifications all go through the client library.

The model to understand is a Firebase project, which is also a Google Cloud project. Data usually lives in Cloud Firestore, a document database of collections and documents, and access is enforced by Security Rules — a separate rules language that checks the signed-in user on every read and write. Client SDKs cover Apple platforms, Android, the web, Flutter, C++ and Unity; Admin SDKs for Node.js, Java, Python, Go and C# run on your own servers with full privileges.

Beyond Firestore and Authentication, a project can use Cloud Storage for files, Cloud Functions for event-driven backend code, Hosting and App Hosting for static and server-rendered sites, Cloud Messaging for push, and SQL Connect for a managed PostgreSQL database queried through GraphQL. The Local Emulator Suite runs Firestore, Auth, Storage, Hosting and Functions on your machine for development and CI. Locations are chosen per product, for example per Firestore database.

Everything runs inside Google Cloud, so your app's data model and access rules are tied to Firebase's own SDKs and rules language. Several pieces, including deploying Cloud Functions and Firestore's managed export, require the pay-as-you-go Blaze plan, and a database's location cannot be changed after it is created.

What makers say

112 makers on why they use Firebase, in their own words on Product Hunt.

- Firebase Auth with ID tokens integrates seamlessly with our Cloudflare Worker proxy — JWT verification via Google's public JWKS is straightforward and well-documented - Firestore's REST API makes it easy to check user plans and track usage counts from edge workers without a heavy SDK - Generous free tier (Spark plan) covers auth + Firestore for early-stage products without upfront cost - Google-backed reliability and scale — no worry about the platform disappearing unlike smaller alternatives like Altogic or Rowy - Battle-tested Auth SDKs for web/mobile with Google, Apple, and email sign-in out of the box

Firebase is the reason a highlight you make in Firefox shows up on your phone a second later. Firestore backs our sync and Auth means signing into a new browser is one tap with an account you already have, so "nothing to migrate" is a real promise rather than a marketing line. For a two person team, not owning that infrastructure is what lets us spend our time on the highlighting experience instead. It has scaled with us from the first Chrome extension to the mobile apps, Kindle sync, and now Firefox.

Firebase is the fastest way to go from zero to a fully working backend. Auth, Firestore, Cloud Functions, hosting, all wired up in minutes. I know the trend is moving toward Supabase and other alternatives, but Firebase is still backed by Google, battle-tested at scale, and for a solo developer shipping a real product, nothing else gets you there faster. I'm running a production app on both app stores and my monthly Firebase bill is under ten cents. Hard to beat that.

The entire backend — Auth, Firestore, and Cloud Functions — in one ecosystem. As a solo developer building an iOS app, Firebase let me skip building a server from scratch. Firestore's real-time sync and Cloud Functions for the AI pipeline made it possible to ship features fast without managing infrastructure.

We use Firebase to power the backend of our app, helping us handle authentication, real-time data updates, and seamless deployment. It’s been a game-changer in allowing us to scale quickly and focus on building a better experience for our users. Big thanks to Firebase for making dev life smoother!

Loved and watch-outs

Themes that recur in makers' words and Hacker News comments, each linked to what it summarises, with how Product Hunt tags its reviews.

Most loved
  • Auth, Firestore, Cloud Functions and hosting wire up in minutes, the fastest path to a working backend for a solo developer. PHHN
  • Real-time sync across devices, with offline caching that remains stronger than most all-in-one rivals. PHHN
  • The free tier and serverless pricing keep costs near zero when starting out. PHPH 2
  • Cloud Messaging handles push notifications for Android and iOS with modest setup. HNHN 2HN 3
Watch-outs
  • A server-side change made the iOS SDK crash apps everywhere, exposing the risk of a closed SDK you cannot control. HNHN 2HN 3HN 4
  • It feels neglected and bolted onto Google Cloud, and it cannot be self-hosted, so leaving means a full migration. HNHN 2HN 3
  • Client-accessible databases guarded only by optional security rules are a common cause of data leaks. HNHN 2
  • Dynamic Links was shut down, leaving apps to find costly replacements. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Firebase

Is it safe to put my Firebase API key in client code?

Yes. Firebase API keys only identify your project; access is controlled by Security Rules, IAM and App Check. Google does advise restricting keys to Firebase APIs and using a separate key for anything else, such as the Gemini API. source ↗

Does Firestore work offline?

Yes, on Android, Apple platforms and the web. The SDK caches the data your app uses, lets you read, write and query it offline, and syncs changes when the device reconnects, with the last write winning. Persistence is on by default on mobile and must be enabled on the web. source ↗

Can I export my Firestore data?

Yes, with the managed export and import service, which writes to Cloud Storage and can be loaded into BigQuery. It requires the Blaze plan and is billed as one document read per exported document. source ↗

Can I choose where my data is stored?

Yes, per product. Each Firestore database gets its own location when you create it, and that location cannot be changed afterwards. source ↗

Can I use Cloud Functions on the free plan?

No. Deploying functions to production requires the Blaze pay-as-you-go plan. source ↗

Is there a SQL database option?

Yes. Firebase SQL Connect provides a managed PostgreSQL database on Cloud SQL; you declare your schema and queries in GraphQL and get typed SDKs for Android, iOS, Flutter and the web. source ↗

Does Firebase Auth support SAML, OIDC and multi-factor login?

Through an optional upgrade to Firebase Authentication with Identity Platform, which adds MFA, SAML and OpenID Connect, multi-tenancy, blocking functions and audit logging without code changes. After upgrading, projects on the free plan are capped at 3,000 daily active users. source ↗

Is Firebase GDPR and SOC 2 compliant?

Google acts as a data processor for Firebase customers under GDPR, with data processing terms covering the services. All Firebase services have completed ISO 27001 and SOC 1, 2 and 3 evaluations, and reports can be requested through Google's Compliance Reports Manager. source ↗

Is Firebase free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at Pay as you go (Blaze). source ↗

Is Firebase open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Firebase?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; Lovable set it up natively.
