Vercel builds and hosts web apps straight from a Git repository. You connect a repo, and every push produces a deployment with its own URL: the production branch (usually main) goes to your live domain, and every other branch or pull request gets a preview deployment you can share and test.

The model to understand is a CDN in front of functions. Static assets are served from Vercel's global network, and server-side code (SSR pages, API routes, webhooks) runs as Vercel Functions in one region you choose, iad1 by default. Vercel detects the framework and configures the build for you; Next.js, SvelteKit, Nuxt, Astro and TanStack Start are supported out of the box, and functions can be written in Node.js, Bun, Python, Go, Ruby or Rust.

For a small team the useful parts are separate Local, Preview and Production environments with their own environment variables, preview URLs on every pull request, automatic failover to another zone or region, and add-ons on the same account such as Blob storage, analytics and a firewall. It runs only on Vercel's cloud, across 19 compute regions.

The limit is that this is request-driven compute, not a server you keep running. A function invocation stops at its maximum duration (5 minutes on Hobby), the filesystem is read-only apart from /tmp, and outbound traffic comes from changing IP addresses unless you pay for static IPs. Long jobs, queues and always-on workers need Vercel Workflows or another host.

What makers say

501 makers on why they use Vercel, in their own words on Product Hunt.

We're using Vercel to host both our landing page and the install script endpoint — and honestly, it just removed every piece of friction we expected to deal with. A few things stood out over the alternatives: - Zero-config deploys from Git — push to main, it's live. No pipeline to babysit. - Edge network out of the box — the install script (curl … | sh style) needs to feel instant from anywhere in the world, and Vercel's edge handled that without us configuring a CDN. - Preview deployments per PR — being able to share a live URL for every change made iterating on the LP way faster. - Custom domains + automatic HTTPS — set once, never thought about it again. We looked at Cloudflare Pages and Netlify too, both solid, but Vercel's DX around Next.js and the speed of the dashboard tipped it. For a small team shipping fast, that compounds.

Quiver is multi-tenant with a subdomain per workspace, so routing is the hard part, not the app. On Vercel the framework and the platform are the same thing. Host-based middleware decides which workspace you're in, AI responses stream from the default runtime with no special setup, cron runs the scheduled work, and when someone creates a workspace I attach its domain through the API and the certificate handles itself. The alternative was operating that myself: a proxy layer for subdomains, certificate automation, a scheduler, and somewhere to stream from. None of it is the product. Preview deploys turned out to matter more than I expected. Every change to the marketing site gets a real URL before anything goes live, which is the same discipline Quiver asks of your content.

Honestly, it came down to Vercel being the path of least resistance for Next.js It's built by the same team, so App Router, server components, and streaming just work with zero config. Preview deployments on every PR changed how we ship: every branch gets a real URL we can smoke-test before merging, and database migrations run as part of the deploy. We also lean on built-in cron jobs and serverless functions, so we never stood up separate infra for background work. Netlify and Cloudflare Pages are solid, but with both we'd have been the second-class citizen on Next.js features and debugging edge cases. With Vercel, the framework and the platform never disagree — that's the whole pitch.

Questions makers ask about Vercel

Can I use the free Hobby plan for a commercial project?

No. Hobby is limited to personal, non-commercial use; anything that takes payments, advertises a product or is built by someone being paid needs Pro or Enterprise. Asking for donations does not count as commercial. source ↗

What happens if I go over the Hobby plan's included usage?

Hobby has no overage billing. In most cases the feature that hit its limit stops until 30 days have passed, though a few features pause for shorter periods. source ↗

How long can a function run?

On Hobby, up to 300 seconds. On Pro and Enterprise the default is 300 seconds and you can raise it to 800, with up to 1800 seconds in beta; past that, Vercel points you to Workflows, which can pause and resume. source ↗

Can I run a Python, Go or Docker backend on Vercel, not just JavaScript?

Yes. Official function runtimes cover Node.js, Bun, Python (ASGI/WSGI apps such as FastAPI, Flask and Django), Go, Ruby, Rust and Wasm, and container images pushed to Vercel's registry can run as functions (in beta). source ↗

Do Vercel Functions support WebSockets?

Yes, in public beta on all plans. Each connection stays on the instance that accepted it and closes when the function reaches its maximum duration, so clients need reconnect logic. source ↗

Where does my server code run, and can I pick the region?

Functions run in a single region, Washington D.C. (iad1) by default, and you can change it to any of 19 regions. Pro and Enterprise teams can run functions in several regions. source ↗

Can I get a fixed IP address so my database can allowlist Vercel?

Not by default; outbound requests come from a changing range of addresses. Static IPs on Pro and Enterprise route function traffic through fixed egress addresses, and Secure Compute on Enterprise gives a dedicated private network. source ↗

Is Vercel SOC 2 and HIPAA compliant?

Vercel has a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation and ISO 27001:2022 certification, supports GDPR and PCI DSS, and signs HIPAA Business Associate Agreements with eligible Pro and Enterprise customers. source ↗

Is Vercel free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $20/mo. source ↗

Is Vercel open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Vercel?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official MCP server (com.vercel/vercel-mcp); it has an official CLI (vercel); v0 set it up natively.
