Resend is a hosted service for sending email from your application: sign-up confirmations, password resets, receipts and other messages triggered by user actions, plus bulk "Broadcasts" sent to a stored contact list. You verify your own domain with DNS records and send from addresses on it.

Your server calls the REST API with an API key; calls from the browser are blocked by CORS, so sending always happens server-side. Each domain is tied to one sending region (N. Virginia, Ireland, São Paulo or Tokyo). There are official SDKs for Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, Go, Rust, Elixir, Java and .NET, and an SMTP relay for tools that only speak SMTP, such as Supabase Auth or Nodemailer. Templates can be written as React components with React Email.

A small team gets production sending from the first day, with no sandbox or approval step; signed webhooks for events such as delivered, bounced, complained, opened and clicked; inbound email at your domain or a resend.app address, delivered to you as a webhook; and idempotency keys so a retried request doesn't send twice.

Region only controls where mail is sent from: account data, logs and metadata are stored in the United States, so it doesn't meet strict EU data-residency requirements. It is not HIPAA compliant and won't sign a BAA. The API allows 10 requests per second per team by default.

What makers say

126 makers on why they use Resend, in their own words on Product Hunt.

Honestly, it came down to how clean the API is for agentic workflows. Basement's AI agents (Baselings) send emails autonomously on behalf of users, outreach, price alerts, deal notifications. So we needed an email provider that felt built for code, not for marketers clicking around a dashboard. Resend's API is so straightforward that plugging it into our agent tool suite took maybe 20 minutes. No wrestling with SMTP configs, no convoluted SDKs. When your AI agent needs to fire off an email as part of a multi-step autonomous task, the last thing you want is friction at the email layer. Resend just gets out of the way. Also the DX is genuinely great. the logs, the dashboard, React Email support. For a two-person team shipping fast, that stuff matters. Not to mention how open they are to feedback and supporting us.

Resend gives Chronock a clean developer experience for transactional email. We use it for localized sign-in codes, organization invitations, booking updates, and product messages. Compared with Postmark or Mailgun, its API and TypeScript-first workflow felt especially direct, letting a small team keep templates and delivery code close to the product without unnecessary operational overhead.

Amazing developer experience, great UX (no visual clutter) and high deliverability/reliability. We started out using MailChimp but quickly felt like they were just throwing a bunch of features in our faces that we didn't ask for. It felt near impossible to just send a plain text email to all our contacts. Resend just removed all the headache over night. Easy to get started, easy to use.

Watch-outs
  • It runs on AWS SES, so an AWS us-east-1 outage stopped both its dashboard and email sending. HNPH
  • API gaps remain, such as the broadcast API not returning email content and no stored copy of sent threads. HNHN 2

Questions makers ask about Resend

Do I need approval before I can email real users?

No. Every account, free ones included, can send to any recipient as soon as a domain is verified; there is no sandbox mode or review queue. source ↗

If I pick the EU region, does my data stay in the EU?

No. The region decides where emails are dispatched from; account data, email metadata and logs are kept in the US whichever region you choose. source ↗

Is it SOC 2, GDPR or HIPAA compliant?

It has a SOC 2 Type II report and a pre-signed GDPR DPA you can download from the dashboard. It is not HIPAA compliant and cannot sign a Business Associate Agreement. source ↗

Can I send directly from my frontend code?

No. Requests from the browser fail with CORS errors by design; send from your backend so the API key stays secret. source ↗

Can it receive email as well as send it?

Yes. Mail sent to your verified domain or to your account's resend.app address triggers a webhook, and you can fetch the content and attachments, forward it or reply in the same thread. source ↗

What are the API rate limits?

By default 10 requests per second per team, shared across all API keys; beyond that you get 429 responses. Trusted senders can ask support for a higher limit. source ↗

Can I plug it into Supabase Auth or another tool over SMTP?

Yes. Point the tool at smtp.resend.com on port 465 with the username "resend" and an API key as the password. source ↗

How long are email logs kept?

Email and log data is kept for 30 days on the Free, Pro and Scale plans; after an account is closed, remaining data is deleted within 90 days. source ↗

Is Resend free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $20/mo. source ↗

Is Resend open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Resend?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; Bolt, Lovable, Replit set it up natively.
