Stripe is a payments API. Your app uses it to charge cards and local payment methods, run subscriptions and send invoices, with the money paid out to your bank account. Because you are the seller of record, the business account, refunds, disputes and tax obligations are yours.

The model: your server creates objects through a REST API (customers, products, prices, subscriptions, payment intents) using an official library for Node, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, Go or .NET. Card details are collected in the browser or app by Stripe's own components, such as the hosted Checkout page, the embeddable Elements, or the iOS, Android and React Native SDKs, so raw card numbers never reach your server. Asynchronous outcomes such as a renewal or a failed payment come back to you as webhook events.

What matters to a small team: isolated sandboxes for testing with test cards and no real money; a hosted customer portal where subscribers update cards, see invoices and cancel; Stripe Tax for calculating and collecting sales tax, VAT and GST; and help importing saved cards from a previous processor without downtime.

The main limit is eligibility: your business has to be based in one of Stripe's supported countries (mainland China, for example, isn't on the list), although you can sell to customers anywhere once you have an account. Using Stripe also doesn't remove your own PCI compliance attestation or your tax registrations.

What makers say

259 makers on why they use Stripe, in their own words on Product Hunt.

We chose Stripe over alternatives for a few key reasons: Developer experience first. Stripe's APIs are best-in-class—clean documentation, webhooks that just work, and seamless testing environments . For Rankfender, where we needed custom subscription logic and marketplace-style payouts down the road, that developer ergonomics mattered. Global reach out of the box. 135+ currencies, 100+ payment methods, and acquiring in 30+ countries . As we scale to agencies worldwide, we didn't want to stitch together multiple payment providers per region. Modular but unified. Unlike Adyen (enterprise-focused) or Braintree (PayPal ecosystem), Stripe hits the sweet spot—simple to start, infinitely customizable as we grow . Radar for fraud, Tax for compliance, Connect for platforms—all under one roof. Pricing transparency. 2.9% + $0.30 domestic, no monthly minimums . No interchange-plus complexity or volume requirements like Adyen demands . For a startup, predictable costs beat "maybe cheaper at scale." Ecosystem trust. Companies like Mozilla, GitHub, and 1Password run on Stripe . When we're handling client money, that institutionally matters.

While all these platforms are great, Stripe was the clear winner for MetricMap for three reasons: Data Depth: As a BI professional, I need the most granular API access possible. Stripe provides the richest data points, which allows MetricMap to sync revenue with user behavior with zero lag. Infrastructure vs. MoR: Platforms like Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, or Dodo Payments act as a Merchant of Record (handling taxes). Since I have my own legal setup (FOP/Estonia), I preferred Stripe’s direct financial infrastructure for lower fees and more control over the checkout experience. Ecosystem & Webhooks: Stripe’s webhook reliability is unmatched. For a real-time analytics tool like MetricMap, speed and data integrity are non-negotiable. However, I know every founder has different needs—that's why I built MetricMap to support Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, and Polar as well. You choose the gateway; we provide the clarity.

Questions makers ask about Stripe

Can I use Stripe if my company isn't in a supported country?

Your business needs to be based in one of Stripe's supported countries or regions, and from there you can sell to customers worldwide. Stripe Atlas lets founders anywhere incorporate a US company to get an account. source ↗

Which languages and platforms have official SDKs?

Server libraries cover Node, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, Go and .NET, and there are client SDKs for the web, iOS, Android and React Native. source ↗

How do I test without moving real money?

Use sandboxes, which are isolated test environments where payments made with test cards aren't sent to card networks. Stripe recommends separate sandboxes for local development and CI. source ↗

Do I have to deal with PCI compliance?

Partly. Stripe is certified as a PCI Level 1 service provider, but you still have to attest compliance every year. Using Stripe's hosted or embedded payment UIs keeps card data off your servers and keeps that attestation light. source ↗

Can I move existing customers' saved cards to Stripe?

Yes. Stripe works with your current processor to import card data securely. You can keep charging existing customers on the old processor until the migration finishes, so there's no downtime. source ↗

Can I take my card data with me if I leave?

Stripe will send customers' card data in an encrypted export to another PCI DSS Level 1 processor. Payment history and subscriptions aren't part of that export, so pull those through the API or Dashboard. source ↗

Does Stripe handle sales tax and VAT?

Stripe Tax calculates and collects sales tax, VAT and GST on Checkout, subscriptions and invoices, and helps with registrations and filings directly or through partners. source ↗

Do I need to build my own subscription management screens?

No. The hosted customer portal lets customers update payment methods and billing details, view invoices and cancel or change subscriptions, and you can configure it in the Dashboard. source ↗

Is Stripe free?

No permanent free tier. source ↗

Is Stripe open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Stripe?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official MCP server (com.stripe/mcp); it has an official CLI (@stripe/cli); Bolt, Lovable, Replit, v0 set it up natively.
