Railway

Deploy apps, workers and databases from a repo or Docker image with little configuration.

Railway runs long-lived services, databases and cron jobs for you without asking you to write infrastructure config. You point it at a GitHub repo or a Docker image, and it builds and deploys a container that keeps running, which suits web servers, background workers and anything that holds connections open.

The model is a project canvas. A project groups services, and each service has one deployment source: a repo, which Railway turns into an image with its Railpack builder (Node, Python, Go, PHP, Java, Ruby, Deno, Rust, Elixir and more) or your own Dockerfile, or a prebuilt image. Services in a project share an encrypted private network with internal DNS, so your app reaches its database by name without exposing it. Variables can reference other services' values.

For a small team the useful parts are ready-made PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and MongoDB, persistent volumes with backups, S3-compatible storage buckets, and environments: a production environment by default, extra persistent ones such as staging, and temporary PR environments that are deleted when the pull request closes. Spending can be capped with a hard usage limit, and idle services can be set to sleep. Services can run in four regions: California, Virginia, Amsterdam and Singapore.

The main limit is that region list; if your users are in South America, Africa or most of Asia, there is no nearby region. Sleeping services also take a moment to wake, and the first request after sleep may fail with a 502.

What makers say

63 makers on why they use Railway, in their own words on Product Hunt.

I evaluated all three. Railway won on developer experience and speed to production. With Railway, I connected my GitHub repo and had a live deployment in minutes. Every push to main auto-deploys. The dashboard gives me HTTP logs, build logs, and deploy logs in one place — when we were debugging 403 errors on form submissions, I could see the exact status codes and response times in real-time without setting up any additional monitoring. Environment variables are dead simple — add them in the dashboard, Railway redeploys automatically. That matters when you're iterating fast, like when we switched Stripe from test to live mode and needed to swap keys, webhook secrets, and price IDs. DigitalOcean felt like I'd be managing infrastructure instead of building product. Render is closer to Railway but the free tier cold starts were a dealbreaker — my database connections would go stale and users would hit errors on first load. Railway just stays out of your way. $5/month, predictable pricing, and I've never had to SSH into anything. For a solo founder shipping fast, that's exactly what I need.

Railway is where we deploy and run almost everything at ClawSecure. It's the only deployment platform we've used that genuinely respects the founder's time, clean UI, fast deploys, transparent observability, and a CLI that just works. We push code, Railway runs it, and we move on to building the actual product. We currently run two production services on Railway: our main site at clawsecure.ai and our runtime monitoring API at api.clawsecure.ai. Both have been rock-solid. What we appreciate most is how Railway lets a small, capital-efficient team operate at the velocity of a much larger one. Going from zero to a live product with real traction in 2 months wouldn't have been possible without infrastructure that gets out of your way. Railway does exactly that.

Questions makers ask about Railway

Is there a free plan, and what happens after the trial?

New accounts get a 30-day trial with a one-time credit grant, limited to 1 GB of RAM, shared vCPU and 5 services per project. After that the account drops to the Free plan with a small monthly credit that does not roll over, and volumes created on the trial are deleted 30 days after its credits expire. source ↗

Why are my trial services blocked from making outbound requests?

Accounts Railway can't verify (by connecting an established GitHub account) get a Limited Trial with restricted outbound network access and only some ports open. Verification is automated, and upgrading to Hobby lifts the restriction. source ↗

Can I cap my spending so a traffic spike can't run up a bill?

Yes. You can set an email alert and a hard limit on compute usage; when the hard limit is hit, all workloads are taken offline until you raise or remove it, after which Railway redeploys them. source ↗

Can services scale to zero when no one is using them?

Yes, with Serverless (formerly App Sleeping). A service sleeps 5 to 10 minutes after it stops sending outbound traffic and wakes on the next request, which may be slow or return a 502; open database connections or telemetry can keep it awake. source ↗

Which regions can I deploy to?

California and Virginia in the US, Amsterdam in Europe and Singapore in Asia-Pacific. You can change a service's region without downtime unless it has a volume, which has to be migrated first. source ↗

Does Railway create preview environments for pull requests?

Yes. PR environments are created when a pull request is opened and deleted when it is merged or closed; you can also keep persistent environments such as staging alongside production. source ↗

Is Railway SOC 2 compliant, and will it sign a HIPAA BAA or GDPR DPA?

Railway is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified and offers a self-service GDPR Data Processing Agreement. A HIPAA BAA is available as an add-on above a committed monthly spend. source ↗

Is Railway free?

No permanent free tier; paid use starts at $5/mo minimum usage. source ↗

Is Railway open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Railway?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; it has an official MCP server (com.railway/mcp).
