Netlify builds and hosts websites and web apps from a Git repository, or from a folder you drag into the browser. Each production deploy publishes your site to its domain, and pull requests get Deploy Previews: temporary copies of the site at their own URL. Any deploy can be rolled back.

The model is a static site on a global CDN with server code added as functions. Netlify Functions are files in your repo, written in TypeScript, JavaScript or Go, that receive a standard Request and return a Response; they run in one region, Ohio by default, and are deployed together with the site. Edge Functions run TypeScript or JavaScript on a Deno-based runtime at the location nearest each visitor, for rewrites, auth checks or personalisation. Framework adapters cover Next.js, Astro, TanStack Start, Angular, Gatsby, Hugo, Eleventy and others.

Small teams get several building blocks on the same account: Netlify Forms (HTML forms collected without backend code, with spam filtering), Blobs key/value storage, a managed Postgres database with branches for deploy previews, password-protected deploys, and background functions that can run for up to 15 minutes. Hosting is Netlify's cloud only; function regions span the US, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America and Canada.

Ordinary functions stop after 60 seconds, so long-running work has to go through background functions or another host. Usage is metered in credits, and when a team's monthly credits are used up every site on the team is paused until the next cycle unless auto recharge is on.

SailhouseThe infrastructure you need to build agents anywhere

“Our front end runs on Netlify, as do most of our examples where serverless functions are used. It's so easy to get started, and so powerful once you start pushing harder.”

TidyYour Mac tidies itself — and names files by what's inside

“Hosts tidymacapp.com and serves the app itself. Deploying is dragging a folder onto a page. For a solo dev shipping a $9 utility, that's exactly the right amount of infrastructure.”

“Netlify makes it easy to ship and iterate without adding backend complexity. It’s reliable, fast by default, and lets me focus on the product instead of infrastructure. For a privacy-first site with no accounts or state, it’s a great fit.”

Questions makers ask about Netlify

What happens when my free plan runs out of credits?

All sites on the team are paused and visitors see a "Site not available" page; new production deploys and form submissions stop too. On the free plan you wait for the next billing cycle or upgrade, since add-on credits can't be bought. source ↗

Can I set a hard spending cap so I never get a surprise bill?

Paid plans stop at their built-in limits unless you turn on auto recharge, which is off by default; if it stays off, projects pause instead of billing more. You can also cap AI feature usage for the team. source ↗

How long can a Netlify Function run?

Synchronous functions have a 60-second limit and scheduled functions 30 seconds, neither of which can be raised. Background functions return a 202 immediately and can keep running for up to 15 minutes, with automatic retries on failure. source ↗

Which regions can my functions run in?

New sites default to US East (Ohio). You can switch to self-serve regions in the US, Ireland, Frankfurt, London, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney, São Paulo and Canada, and Paris or Milan through support; the choice applies to all functions on the site. source ↗

Which languages can I write functions in?

Serverless functions can be written in TypeScript, JavaScript or Go. Edge Functions are TypeScript or JavaScript and run on a Deno-based runtime. source ↗

Do I have to use Git to deploy?

No. You can drag and drop a built folder in the dashboard, though Netlify recommends Git so you get rollbacks and better tracking of changes. source ↗

Which compliance standards does Netlify cover?

Netlify's security page lists ISO 27001, ISO 27018, SOC 2, PCI DSS, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA and DORA, with TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. source ↗

Is Netlify free?

Yes — there is a free tier a small product can run on; paid use starts at $9/mo. source ↗

Is Netlify open source or self-hostable?

Not open source, and hosted only.

Can AI coding agents work with Netlify?

It serves an llms.txt docs index; Bolt set it up natively.
